He Promised Me A Rose Garden

Well, what can I say? The ramblings of yet another southern belle from Georgia. What more can you ask for? Ya'll come back now, you here?

Grandpa Drew Dockery Shadowbox

I have been taking the things that belong to each of my family and making shadowboxes.

I wish my picture was better but this is what it looks like.

Walmart is selling the big boxes for $9.95 now and I hope I can get somemore before they discontinue them.

The contents include from top left clockwise around his picture at the property in south Atlanta, Georgia:

1. 1959 Georgia Drivers License with his signature

2. Obituary

3. Automobile Insurance (Can you believe that on June 15, 1956 he only paid $14.56 for coverage!)

4. Leather coin holder (My grandmother use to use it after his death)

5. Pocket knife with 3 blades

6. Glass top to old coffee pot

7 Leather wallet with saddle on top and stitching around it.
Inside the above license and insurance were in it. Now it holds a very young
picture of my grandmother Lois, my sister and me, school picture of my sister,
school picture of me, picture of young child ?, picture of my granddad with a
a friend of his. Need to ask my mother who the man is so that I can edit this.

8. 1959 Season State Resident Fishing License dated 10 April 1959

9. 4 screws from his garage

10. Tin cigarette case with Vicroy cigarettes! Lord I would hate to have to smoke
that now *laughs* They are still together.

11. Wood pipe

I have some things in my workshop and going to see if any of those things will fit in the box.

I did a shadowbox for my grandmother Lois which I will share. I loaned it to my mother for the time being. She thought is was so very nice. It is a smaller box and I want to get one just like this box to change it over.

I enjoyed putting this together. I was thinking about taking these tiny books I have and writing all the memories of him (and one for her) and placing it in the boxes to be sealed with their things.

Perhaps those that follow me will enjoy these boxes in years to come.

Thank you very much for the comment.

Actually, it is the title of my poem and book in the making. I wrote the poem at the beginning of my posting many many years ago. With it I started a book which is of course not completed.

Please stay in touch.

Wishing you sunshine and roses.
